Focus on... merino wool: the most versatile fiber in the world

Millions of years of evolution at the service of your comfort, it may seem a bit overrated like that, no? But that's what you'll find when you wear Merino wool clothing. Withstanding temperatures ranging from -10° to +30° s

Wool still suffers from prejudices and unfounded beliefs. Before, wool was used to keep warm, but it was scratchy, heavy and coarse. In fact, it was "classic" wool produced by different breeds of sheep and not the extra-fine wool produced by merino sheep. You can certainly imagine that if we talk to you about this specific wool today, it is to show you that behind this unflattering image, wool has evolved a lot but above all, that merino wool is a fiber that is simply exceptional because of its fineness and its different properties.

Here are the many advantages of extra-fine merino wool that we will present to you :

- Regulates body temperature

- Neutralizes odors

- Does not deform

- Soft and comfortable

- Easy to clean

- Ultra fast drying

- Sustainable

- Biodégradable

- UV resistant

- Thermo-regulating

Merino wool has excellent insulating properties. Just like on the back of a sheep, wool protects against cold and heat. Thanks to its physical structure, wool has the ability to trap a significant amount of air between each of its fibers, creating a buffer between the wearer and the environment. Thanks to keratin, a protein that acts as a barrier to the environment, wool protects the sheep from heat and cold.

Ultra-light and breathable, the merino sheep's summer wool keeps it cool when the temperature reaches 30°C. In winter, an extra layer of wool is added to the sheep's summer fleece, keeping it warm when the mercury drops to -10°C.

THERMO-REGULATING

Merino wool has excellent insulating properties. Just like the sheep's back, wool protects against both cold and heat.

Thanks to its physical structure, wool is able to trap a large quantity of air between each of its fibres, creating a buffer between the wearer and the environment.

Thanks to keratin, a protein that acts as a barrier to the environment, wool protects sheep from heat and cold.

Ultra-light and breathable, Merino sheep's summer wool keeps them cool when the temperature reaches 30°C. In winter, an extra layer of wool is added to the sheep's summer fleece, keeping it warm when the mercury drops to -10°C.

All these properties make our Merino wool T-shirts a must-have for every season.

Whether as a first layer for winter or as a single layer for summer, merino wool will be with you all year round.

ODOUR NEUTRALISER

Thanks to its complex physical and chemical structures, wool has a natural power and a great capacity not to retain everyday odours such as perspiration, smoke, traffic fumes or even cooking smells.

This ability, applied to our T-shirts, means that you won't be trapping the unpleasant odours of everyday life, unlike our 'friend' cotton, which revels in all these smells to give you a wonderful digest of them.

By its very nature, wool prevents the proliferation of bacteria and fungi. In other words, it won't retain any body odour. So there's no need to wash your woollen items so often: just air them out from time to time to freshen them up. Only wash them if they are stained.

WON'T WARP

Wool is resilient, which means that with its elasticity and natural recovery it won't pucker or warp. This is because wool fibres are not straight, but naturally have waves known as crimps. Each fibre has a crimp, which means that in use, each fibre acts like a spring, so when the fabric is stretched, it returns to its original position through the action of the fibres contracting.

Merino wool fibres therefore return to their original state after being compressed or stretched, allowing garments to retain their shape when worn or during care.

 SOFT AND COMFORTABLE

The fact that this fabric is so comfortable to wear is largely due to its fineness: the finer the fibre, the softer it is and the less it feels on the skin.

Merino sheep are renowned for producing the finest wool. This wool can be up to twice as fine as conventional sheep's wool and three times as fine as a human hair!

The finer the wool, the softer and curlier it becomes. The crimp (undulations in the fibre) of wool contributes to the puffiness and lightness of a wool knitting yarn.

This fineness gives merino wool garments a superior hand and superb drape.

CLEANS EASILY

Wool fabrics are easy to clean because dirt, soil and stains stay on the surface and don't set in. When woollen fabrics are cleaned, the wool fibres absorb water easily and then, uniquely, they swell up, making it easy to remove dirt, soil and stains. Not a bad combination for a garment, is it?

DRIES QUICKLY

Merino wool has the ability to react to changes in humidity. The hygroscopic core of the wool fibre can absorb up to 35% of its weight in moisture (vapour), allowing the moisture to move away from the body and evaporate.

This property, combined with its fineness, allows moisture to evaporate even more quickly. Your Merino wool T-shirt dries in record time, much faster than cotton T-shirts!

 NATURAL, BIODEGRADABLE AND RENEWABLE

Under the right conditions, if you wanted to compost merino wool, it would take around three months for it to biodegrade and disappear completely into the soil. Synthetic fibres are a far cry from this.

What's more, a merino sheep produces a new fleece every year using water, grass and air, nothing more.

This fleece can therefore be harvested without harming the animal, and is already so clean that very little soap or water is needed to clean it. Merino wool is therefore part of an eco-friendly process that benefits everyone. Man is simply there to reap the benefits of what nature has to offer.

Last but not least, the merino wool used by Seagale is certified mulesing-free, meaning that it is animal-friendly.

UV-RESISTANT

As wool is the first layer between the sheep's skin and the sun, it has a natural UV barrier, so you won't suffer the radiation associated with excessive exposure to the sun.

Merino wool is produced in an environmentally-friendly way, with no impact on the life of the animal and with exceptional properties that are a far cry from those of materials such as cotton, which is much more widely used. It's thanks to each of these details that at Seagale we have confidence in merino wool, which makes life easier for millions of people around the world every day.
